Mast tower is a special high-rise structure composed of a slender shaft and multiple layers of guy wires (ropes), which maintain upright stability through the tension of the guy wires.
Basic structure of mast tower
The core of a mast tower consists of three main parts: the shaft, the cable system, and the foundation structure.
Rod body: As the main supporting structure, it is usually made of steel (steel pipe or spatial truss combination), wood or reinforced concrete. Steel structure members are commonly made of single seamless steel pipes or welded steel pipes with rolled plates, while composite components are mostly triangular/quadrilateral space trusses, consisting of chord and web members made of materials such as angle steel and round steel. The aspect ratio of a pole is usually between 120-200, with the characteristics of high height and small cross-section.
Fiber rope system: Multi layer high-strength galvanized steel wire ropes are arranged in layers at equal angles (3-4 per layer), with an inclination angle of 30 ° -60 ° (preferably 45 °). The fiber rope is pre stressed with flower basket screws to enhance overall stiffness and stability. The number of layers of the rope increases with height, and the distance between nodes should be kept at 80-100 to maintain the slenderness ratio of the rod.
Basic structure: divided into central foundation (bearing the force transmitted by the pole body) and anchor foundation (resisting the tension of the fiber rope). There are various forms of anchor foundations, such as gravity type, retaining wall type, and slab type, among which gravity type relies on its own weight to resist tension but requires more consumables.
Types of communication mast towers
Cable type communication mast: generally not exceeding 40 meters in height, maintained stable through multiple layers of cables. In areas where the basic wind pressure is greater than 0.40kPa, the height should be controlled within 30 meters, and it is not recommended to use it in areas above 0.60kPa. The height of the roof cable tower usually does not exceed 20 meters.
Single tube communication mast: composed of a single large-diameter steel pipe, with a height not exceeding 50 meters. It has the advantages of simple size, beauty, and small footprint, but the cost is relatively high. Part of the design is in the form of a "beautified tree", covered with imitation bark material to hide the antenna.
The mechanical performance of mast towers exhibits significant nonlinear characteristics:
Load characteristics: Wind load is the dominant control factor, and special calculation of ice load is required. Under random wind loads, dynamic reactions are prone to occur, and the design needs to consider wind pressure, wind vibration coefficient, and structural natural vibration period.
Stability requirement: The horizontal displacement of the node shall not exceed 1% of the height, and the overall stability safety factor shall not be less than 1.5. The prestressing of the fiber rope and the stiffness of the pole body need to be balanced to avoid overall instability caused by local bending.
Calculation method: Static analysis adopts elastic support continuous beam method (symmetrical layout) and matrix displacement method (asymmetrical layout), while dynamic calculation needs to consider the response of multi degree of freedom system. Modern design utilizes techniques such as wind tunnel experiments and finite element analysis to enhance wind resistance performance.
As a long-standing and constantly innovative structural form, the design and application of mast towers fully demonstrate the human engineering wisdom's conquest of vertical space.
