Transmission Tower Design for Coastal and High-Corrosion Environments

Building transmission lines along the coast is challenging. The combination of high humidity, salt spray, and strong winds creates one of the most aggressive environments for steel structures.
If a corrosion-resistant transmission tower is not designed and manufactured correctly, it can start rusting within just a few years. Here are the key design and manufacturing strategies to ensure your towers survive the coast.
1. The Threat: Why Coastal Areas Are Brutal
Salt Spray (Chlorides): Sea breeze carries salt particles that settle on the steel. Chlorides break down protective layers and accelerate rust.
High Humidity: Constant moisture provides the perfect environment for electrochemical corrosion.
Strong Winds: Coastal areas often face typhoons or hurricanes, meaning towers must handle both extreme wind loads and severe corrosion.
According to ISO 9223, coastal environments are classified as C5 (Very High) or CX (Extreme) corrosion categories. Standard protection is simply not enough.
2. Key Design & Manufacturing Solutions

A. Thicker Hot-Dip Galvanizing (The First Line of Defense)
For coastal projects, standard galvanizing (70–85μm) is often insufficient. You must specify a thicker zinc coating.
- Requirement: Demand a minimum average zinc thickness of ≥ 100μm to 120μm.
- Standard: Must comply with ASTM A123 or ISO 1461.
- Tip: Always check the galvanizing test report before shipment.
B. Duplex Systems (Galvanizing + Painting)
For extreme C5 environments, applying a paint system over the hot-dip galvanized steel is highly recommended. This is called a "Duplex System."
The zinc protects the steel; the paint protects the zinc.
This combination can extend the tower's lifespan to 50+ years, even in harsh coastal conditions.
C. Smart Structural Design (Avoid Water Traps)
Corrosion often starts where water accumulates
- Drainage Holes: Ensure all hollow sections, plates, and tower legs have weep holes to let water drain out.
- Avoid Crevices: Design connections to minimize tight gaps where salt and water can get trapped and cause crevice corrosion.
- Smooth Edges: Avoid sharp edges, which can cause thin spots during the galvanizing process.
D. High-Strength Galvanized Fasteners
Bolts and nuts are the weakest points. Ensure all fasteners are hot-dip galvanized (Grade 8.8 or higher) or made of stainless steel. Standard zinc-plated bolts will rust very quickly on the coast.

3. What to Look for When Buying Coastal Towers
When sourcing a corrosion resistant transmission tower, ask your supplier:
- What is the exact zinc thickness (μm)?
- Can you provide an independent third-party coating test report?
- Is the tower design equipped with proper drainage holes?
- Are the bolts hot-dip galvanized?
